New white boots. Wide-legged jeans. Oversized patterned blazer. Gold earrings.
That's the fashion wish list currently sitting in my Notes app. I've been putting off clicking "add to cart" on these items for weeks now. Partly because I was holding out for Fashion Month—the ultimate source of shopping and street style inspo coming from New York, London, Milan, and Paris. (Btw, head to @r29style, TikTok, and Refinery29.com for our on-the-ground coverage.) But also because I'm feeling over online browsing. This February, I want the romance of shopping back. I want to go on a long date with my favorite mall, the one that is a 40-minute ride away but always has the best sales (and the best food court). I want to wander aimlessly into bustling department stores and boutiques and flirt with all the Chelsea boots and combat boots and light washes and high–waisted jeans until I find the ones.
I've written about my love of the mall before—the nostalgia of it of course, but also how in-store shopping has become an analog experience we've come to crave in our increasingly digital world (and post-lockdown). "When it comes to brand sentiment and lifetime value and creating and nurturing that relationship with the customer, having a slice of in-person is definitely important," Lisa Bühler of Lisa Says Gah told me last year.
As soon as my sore feet from wandering in heels from show to show this week are rested up, I'll pull on my Reeboks and sweats, throw on my AirPods, and hit the mall. Even if I leave without a thing, I won't mind. It's the thrill of the chase, after all. |
